REPORTS: Braxton Jones Back With the Bears on a 1-Year Deal

The Chicago Bears are running it back with Braxton Jones.

At least, that is the story for now.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shares the news of Jones’ return to Chicago’s football team on a one-year deal that could be worth up to $10 million:

At first blush, it looks like Braxton Jones will get an opportunity to win back his starting left tackle job in 2026. And if he makes every penny of that $10 million that Fowler reports to be the contract’s value, I would assume that (1) he got the job, (2) kept it, and (3) played well enough to secure all those incentives. If that is how it shakes out for Jones and the Bears, I’d like to think it would be a good thing that Jones get that deal’s full value.

However, I’ll wait to see what the contract details look like before I take a leap of faith and assume that Jones is being handed the starting job in 2026.

Braxton Jones is reportedly set to rejoin the Chicago Bears

Last week, we discussed the Bears’ left tackle conundrum as it pertained to Braxton Jones. The 2025 season was a mixed one for Jones, who began the year as the team’s starting left tackle but ended it on the list of inactive players for the team’s playoff loss against the Los Angeles Rams. In between those two end points, Jones was benched, lost his starting job, dealt with an injury, landed on injured reserve, and worked his way back to be able to practice with the team during the playoffs. To say it was a journey for Jones would be underselling it.

What is next for Jones is to be determined. Getting healthy is a priority in my eyes. Because even though Braxton Jones returned to the starting lineup in Week 1 of the 2025 season after suffering a serious injury at the end of 2024, Jones never truly looked like his old self. And when Jones was his old self, he was a solid and respectable left tackle. He wasn’t perfect, but he was a suitable starting-caliber NFL left tackle. If the Bears can get the player he was from 2022-24, then they will have no regrets about bringing him back in 2026.

Even after bringing Braxton Jones back, there is a part of me that wonders if the team isn’t done at the left tackle position. The Detroit Lions granted Taylor Decker his release. Could he be someone Chicago brings in to battle with Jones? And with the 2026 NFL Draft coming in April, I can’t rule out the possibility of this front office kicking the tires on draft prospects. In other words, Jones might have the inside track right now, but the story of Chicago’s left tackle position is very much still unwritten.
