For most families, a hurricane means staying inside, but for Southern Charm star Whitner Slagsvol and his uncle Jimmy Buffett, it apparently meant grabbing a board and heading straight for the waves.
Whit tells Parade that any time Buffett was in Charleston, they'd always go to dinner with the family and surf whenever possible.
"One time, it was during an evacuation order because there was a hurricane that might hit, and it didn't end up hitting," he recalls of Buffett's Sept. 2018 visit as Hurricane Florence loomed with a possible South Carolina strike. "It's always great because we end up having this like sunny, great, fall weekend with no tourists and no people and great surf."
He continues, "So Jimmy and I went surfing, and he has a line from one of his songs where he's like—I'm paraphrasing—like, 'I feel so bad, I feel like surfing in a hurricane,' and everyone caught on to the fact that we were surfing in a hurricane. I woke up the next day, and the picture of me and him with our boards on the beach had gone to every publication across the world, and [the headline] was 'Jimmy Buffett surfing in a hurricane'...and then this schlep."
Buffett posted the moment on his Instagram alongside Whit and the caption, "'I ain't afraid of dying; I got no need to explain; I feel like going surfing in a hurricane,' #follybeachsurfingOn a serious note - respect mother nature, please be safe and listen to your local authorities."
View this post on InstagramWhit has many fond memories surfing alongside Buffett and "it was always great just getting in the water with him," he says, adding, "I was just down in Costa Rica with my dad, the 72-year-old dude is still dropping in on like shoulder, chest high waves on a paddle board nowadays. So it was always great, either Jimmy or my dad just kind of getting in the water with these sort of figures of your life."
Alongside Shep Rose, Whit had an opportunity to surf during their trip to Mexico on Southern Charm, a day Whit really enjoyed. "In Mexico, Shep and I had an entire day of some really great surf," he recalls. "It was like a half-mile paddle out. We didn't get any good footage of us on the waves that we did catch, and we had caught some really great rides that day."
Southern Charm is on Wednesday nights on Bravo.
