While she's remained ageless, Barbie is officially 67 years old today.
The beloved doll was unveiled on March 9, 1959, per KCTV5. According to the publication, Barbie had her first public appearance during New York's 1959 American Toy Fair.
Barbie's creator, Ruth Handler, who died in 2002 at the age of 85, opened up about the beloved doll in a 1994 interview on Eye to Eye, hosted by Connie Chung. Handler, who co-founded Mattel, shared that she was aware of how important Barbie was to the doll's devoted fans. According to Handler, fans often thanked her for improving their lives by creating Barbie.
"They really are carried away by how important Barbie is to them. Barbie is the most important thing in their life," said Handler during the 1994 interview.
Handler also shared that Barbie's namesake was her daughter, Barbara Handler. She said that her daughter didn't appreciate the doll, stating, "She got quite embarrassed by the whole thing." Handler also said she believed her daughter "resented it very much through the years" because she was busy with her career at Mattel.
"All her friends parents were available. And she used to ask me why I had to be different than everybody else. And that really hurt," said Handler during the interview.
In the 1994 interview, Handler also addressed criticism involving Barbie's body. She said she wanted to make a doll who looked like a "grownup" because "a little girl could dream dreams of growing up" while playing with a Barbie.
In addition, she stated that Barbie's many clothing pieces and accessories had nothing to do with vanity. Rather, she wanted children with a Barbie to have different options when coming up with imaginary scenarios with the doll in hand.
"Her clothing would permit the child to pretend they were in a certain kind of activity the image you were projecting," said Handler to Chung.
