Former Bears LB Tremaine Edmunds Signs Three-Year Deal with Giants

Former Chicago Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds didn’t stay on the free-agent market long.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Edmunds is signing a three-year contract worth $36 million with the New York Giants, with $23.7 million fully guaranteed. The move comes less than a week after the Bears released Edmunds on March 5, clearing $15 million in salary cap space.

Before the release became official, the Bears allowed Edmunds to seek a trade, and there was reported interest from several teams, including the Giants, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders. Ultimately, no trade materialized, allowing Edmunds to hit free agency before landing with New York and new head coach John Harbaugh.

Ironically enough, Edmunds was the linebacker Chicago signed to replace Roquan Smith, who was traded to John Harbaugh’s Ravens a few years ago. Harbaugh, now in New York without Smith, chooses Edmunds to fill Smith’s role on his new roster.

The 27-year-old linebacker leaves Chicago after a productive three-year run with the team.

Over 45 games with the Bears, Edmunds recorded 335 total tackles (190 solo), 11 tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 24 passes defended, two sacks, and nine interceptions. Known for his range and coverage ability, Edmunds remained one of the more versatile off-ball linebackers in the league during his time in Chicago.

Before arriving with the Bears, Edmunds built his reputation with the Buffalo Bills, where he earned two Pro Bowl selections and established himself as one of the NFL’s top young linebackers. A former first-round pick (No. 16 overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft, Edmunds entered the league with rare size and athletic traits for the position and has been a full-time starter throughout his career.

His departure from Chicago is part of a broader defensive reshaping by general manager Ryan Poles this offseason.

Earlier today, the Bears agreed to a three-year, $30 million contract with linebacker Devin Bush, a deal that includes $21 million guaranteed. Bush is expected to step into a significant role in Chicago’s defense and projects as a true three-down linebacker after a strong 2025 season.

Last year, Bush graded extremely well in multiple areas, posting an 80.4 coverage grade (4th among linebackers) and an 87.3 run-defense grade (8th among linebackers), according to Pro Football Focus.

Chicago also continued adding depth to the position by re-signing linebacker DeMarco Jackson to a two-year, $7.5 million contract earlier in the day.

When viewed together, the moves highlight an interesting cap strategy from Poles and the Bears front office.

Edmunds carried a $15 million cap hit for the 2026 season, a number that ultimately became difficult to justify as the team looked to reallocate resources across the roster. Instead of keeping Edmunds at that price, the Bears appear to have spread that money across multiple defensive contributors.

Bush’s expected $10 million average annual value and Coby Bryant’s $5.96 million cap hit (the safety Chicago also added earlier today) effectively combine to match what Edmunds would have cost the team in 2026.

In other words, the Bears may have added two defensive starters for roughly the same cap number Edmunds would have carried alone.

From Chicago’s perspective, the move represents a calculated shift in roster construction as the team attempts to build a more balanced defense heading into the 2026 season. For Edmunds, meanwhile, the next chapter will come in New York, where he joins a Giants defense looking to improve under Harbaugh’s leadership.

And if his production in Chicago is any indication, the Giants may have just landed one of the more impactful linebackers available on the open market.
