Lord of the Rings Star Elijah Wood Agrees With Costar on Playing His Iconic Role While Hes Alive and Able

Elijah Woodisn’t quite ready to say goodbye to his iconic franchise role, and neither is his co-star Ian McKellen. Wood recently responded to McKellen’s remarks about continuing to play their legendary characters for as long as possible, rather than seeing the roles recast.

The popular franchise recently celebrated its 23rd anniversary, with some of the leading cast members coming together to celebrate the grand event. Fans are also looking forward to a new installment to the franchise with Andy Serkis'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Wood told The U.K. Sunday Times that McKellan spilled the beans on the possibility of them returning for a new film installment, but is keeping quiet until they make an official announcement. He added that there's a "genuine feeling of getting the band back together." The actor also gave his two cents on McKellan's previous comment on not letting anyone play his legendary role as Gandalf while he's still able, and admits he feels the same way.

"I totally get that. I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able," Wood said. "And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema, and you see the hat turn around, and it’s Gandalf. Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together."

Both McKellan and Wood's comments have led fans to believe that they are both reprising their roles for Serkis's new installment, alongside the actor as Gollum. Last year, Orlando Bloom also revealed a similar sentiment, having stated he's "hate to see anyone else play Legolas" and would gladly accept returning to the role. His Fellowship of the Ring co-star Viggo Mortensen also expressed his desire to return under the right circumstances.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was originally scheduled for a 2026 release but has been pushed back to 2027. It takes place during the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, where Aragorn embarks on a dangerous quest to track down Gollum before Sauron does. None of the original cast have yet to announce their official return to the franchise.
