Swanson Keeps Raking, Roster, Injuries, WBC, Nature of Spring, and Other Cubs Bullets

The Cubs blew a 5-2 lead against the Giants and lost yesterday, which is the kind of thing that would have me flipping tables in the regular season. And I suppose that’s part of the beauty of Spring Training, because I don’t care even the tiniest lick about the loss …

A triple to left? Another double? Dansby Swanson is definitely feeling good physically this spring:

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) March 8, 2026 He had a double to left, too, as he continues to rake so completely this spring that you really wish it were Opening Day already.

    — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) March 8, 2026 Something interesting to note, because he takes a LOT of pitches: Michael Busch challenged strike calls twice in the game, and was right both times. We know that catchers will likely have the most leeway to challenge calls on behalf of their pitchers, but I suspect that, when it comes to hitters, some guys will get more leeway to challenge from their managers. Michael Busch, who has exceptional strike zone discipline, might be a guy who gets the green light to challenge as much as he wants (ditto Seiya Suzuki!). The first set of cuts arrived yesterday, and it was a collection of prospects and minor leaguers (mostly guys you’d call true prospects) who were not in big league camp to actually make the team. So, the cuts were neither surprising nor bothersome, as these guys can now head over to minor league camp to gear up for their player development paths in the minor leagues this year. Of note, some may still be pulled over to the big league side to play in games. The other big roster-y news yesterday, if you missed it, had both Porter Hodge (flexor strain) and Jordan Wicks (radial nerve irritation in forearm) dealing with physical ailments, so they are out of the running for an Opening Day big league job. The reality is, however, that neither was likely to make the 26-man roster out of the chute anyway (they have option years remaining), which isn’t to say the injuries aren’t concerning – you still want these guys to be impactful this season at some point, because they have that potential – but they don’t really impact the current roster battles. Hopefully each can rest up, get past these issues, and be ready to ramp up in time for most of the season. “These are hard, physical jobs that are going to cause injuries, so they’re going to happen, and putting the roster together, you have to look at it, unfortunately,” Craig Counsell said, per the Tribune. “You don’t want anybody to get hurt. Certainly weren’t expecting those two guys to get hurt, but they’re the two guys right now that are going to be dealing with something. On both ends, we’re fortunate they’re not the long-term injuries right now, so that’s a good thing.” Hunter Harvey, who very much is expected to make the Opening Day bullpen, was at one time listed as the starter for yesterday’s game to get in his inning of work. He did not make that start. Before we freak out (he has a recent, and also long, history of injury issues), keep in mind how overly cautious things are in Spring Training, especially a few weeks out from the open of the season. Sometimes guys get bumped a day. Sometimes they decide to just throw in a simulated game on the back fields. Sometimes the arm feels meh, and they just need a little extra rest. Sometimes it was an error in the initial listing or the lineup feed from MLB. It’s not always a serious situation. (Please don’t be a serious situation.) Otherwise, a trio of expected Cubs relievers – Caleb Thielbar, Phil Maton, and Hoby Milner – got in their clean inning of work in the game. Seiya Suzuki had himself a weekend, homering twice as Japan ultimately clinched a spot in the WBC quarterfinal:

    — FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) March 8, 2026 This seems like such a good idea that the fact that more guys don’t do it tells me it’s pretty hard to pull off:

For those people who think he's "tipping" or hitters will catch on…Here are two sweepers from the next at bat. You'll notice he switches sides of the rubber on these too.He doesn't ALWAYS throw each pitch from opposite sides. He uses rubber position as an additional… pic.twitter.com/3S66lIYKPg

    — Daikin Park (@DaikinPark) March 8, 2026 I feel like PCA has the potential to take so much away from this WBC experience, playing with so many guys who’ve successfully navigated that transition from great talent to consistent star. Never know what little tips he can pick up from a wide range of players he might never otherwise interact with in the clubhouse. This is so cool:

    — Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) March 8, 2026 These wins can mean a whole lot to some guys:

    — Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) March 8, 2026 That game was interesting, by the way, as new Brewers lefty Kyle Harrison struck out eight and started getting a whole lot of hype for it in my feed. Yes, his tweaked slider and new changeup – with the help of the Brewers – may finally unlock him in a way neither the Giants nor Red Sox could. I recognize that possibility, and we know the Brewers are very good at that side of the game. But the reason I get into this is more about the nature of Spring Training and why we have to be cautious about looking at results. Setting aside the two runs he gave up or the 60 pitches he needed to get through 3.0 innings, here are the eight victims of his strikeouts: Brennen Davis (extreme high strikeout guy), Patrick Wisdom (extreme high strikeout guy), Andrew Knizner (career 68 wRC+), Will Wilson (journeyman Triple-A guy who hits below average there with an elevated strikeout rate), Jonny Farmelo (21-year-old with a huge strikeout rate at High-A), Victor Robles (no idea what he is at this point), Davis again, Wisdom again. So. Yeah. None of this is to say that Harrison won’t be great this year. He might be. Brewers gonna Brewer. It’s just a reminder that looking at “wow, 8 Ks in 3.0 IP!” is really not going to tell you much in the spring, and that’s just as true for Cubs pitchers as anyone else.
