Prom season is almost here, but the perfect dress can be expensive.
A suburban nonprofit is working with a senior living facility to make sure students don’t have to worry about finding and paying for the perfect dress.
Residents at Covenant Living at the Holmstad in Batavia are volunteering their time and lifelong sewing skills to repair donated prom dresses for CHIP IN Batavia, an organization that supports local students in need.
CHIP IN Batavia is collecting dresses for its annual prom dress giveaway. Many arrive with small issues—loose beading, missing buttons, broken zippers, or minor tears. Instead of discarding them, the Holmstad’s residents make sure every gown is wearable and wonderful.
“My mother taught me how to sew way back when,” resident Barbara Palmer said. “She would be very proud to see that I am continuing what she taught me. I love helping people. I just hope these young ladies can find the perfect dress.”
The organization also gets donations of shoes, jewelry, purses and new makeup. Cash donations are used for tuxedos.
“We started just trying to help our Batavia students,” said Melinda Kintz with CHIP IN Batavia. “We said this is bigger than us. We have so much we can share so we opened it up to any student from any school from anywhere. Last year, we served over 40 ZIP codes and gave away almost a thousand dresses. The ladies have been doing great working, hoping we can keep them on our side during the rest of the year.”
The repaired gowns will be given away to students during Chip IN’s annual Prom Dress Giveaway on March 14 and 15 at the Batavia Public Library.
