‘80s Country Icon, With 3 Top 10 Hits, Turns 62

Jennifer McCarter broke into the ‘80s country music scene with a string of memorable hits.

Considered one of the powerhouses of that era, along with her group, The McCarters, the Tennessee native celebrates a major milestone as she turns 62.

Born on March 7, 1964, in Sevierville, music is something etched in her soul and a passion she grew up with thanks to her musically inclined family.

At a young age, she and her twin sisters were introduced to harmonies and singing, which would later lead them to form a group called The McCarters.

With Jennifer’s striking voice, she became the lead vocalist while Lisa and Teresa McCarter sang harmony vocals.

While country music was booming in the ‘80s, especially in Tennessee, where the genre’s roots ran deep, the McCarters managed to break through and captivate listeners with their unique identity and music that seamlessly blended traditional country with pop music.

With the launch of their professional career in the late ‘80s, they were signed under Warner Bros Records and were able to release their debut album The Gift.

Their single “I Give You Music” peaked at No. 28 on the US Country charts.

Meanwhile, the song “The Gift” jumped to fourth spot in the Billboard Hot Country Songs while "Timeless and True Love," which was the group’s first single, entered at No. 5.

Their second album experienced the same success after releasing "Up and Gone" in 1990 which was part of their second album Better Be Home Soon.

Interestingly, it was their first album under the group’s new name, Jennifer McCarter & The McCarters, a strategic move by the recording company to spotlight Jennifer’s role as the lead singer.

Unfortunately, this was also their last album as a trio, but they remained active, touring and performing live, especially in Europe.

With the momentum fading, the group disbanded sometime in the early ‘90s, but Jennifer continued to pursue music and formed a new group in 2017 called Them Rubies.

As she celebrates 62, the country icon’s story is a reminder that music is more than a career, it is a lifelong journey, one she’s still passionately following today.
