The pilot who was killed when the small, single-engine plane he was flying crashed into a residential area in a far northern suburb of Chicago was identified by authorities.
Chester Wojnicki, a 75-year-old man from Mount Prospect, was identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Thursday as the pilot killed in the crash on March 4.
Wojnicki died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash, the coroner said.
Around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Wojnicki was flying a Cessna T210 when he crashed on the 800 block of Swallow Street near Milwaukee Avenue in unincorporated Deerfield, authorities said.
Neighbors who witnessed the frightening crash told NBC Chicago they tried to check on the pilot but the “cockpit was destroyed.”
“We saw the light sorta coming in, and then we saw it come in and go straight down,” one neighbor said. “We knew it was a plane crash right away.”
The plane had departed from Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, and was heading to Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The plane crashed near a row of townhomes where roughly 900 people live, according to a person who works on the property. Authorities said the plane struck a roof and two gas meters as it came down.
Wojnicki was pronounced dead at the scene. No other people were on board, and no other injuries were reported, authorities said.
