ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Scouts gathered at St. John the Evangelist Church on Humboldt Street for the annual “Scouting for Food” drive Saturday, an effort aimed at helping families facing hunger in Rochester, Irondequoit, and Brighton.
Scouts from 12 different packs and troops have been collecting food in the past weeks.
The event comes as food insecurity continues to affect thousands in the region. According to Foodlink, nearly 161,000 people in its service area struggle to access enough healthy food, including about 45,000 children. Local leaders say the level of food insecurity in the community is now higher than it has been in more than a decade.
Several local food pantries are selecting the food needed for their communities, including Loop Ministries, Asbury First’s Grocery Bag Ministry, the Community Food Cupboard of Rochester, Irondequoit Community Cupboard, and the Brighton Food Cupboard.
