1973 Classic Anthem Was a No. 1 Hit 52 Years Ago Today

The chart-topping glam rock single "Jealous Mind" (1973) by English rock singer Alvin Stardust made music history 52 years ago when it landed in the No. 1 spot on the U.K. Singles Chart on March 7, 1974.

Stardust was a persona created by Bernard William Jewry in the '70s and '80s during the glam rock era after his former band, Shane Fenton and the Fentones, broke up. The new character was a reference to David Bowie's iconic persona Ziggy Stardust, and like Bowie, Jewry as Stardust embodied the eccentric and campy aesthetics of other glam rock musicians of the time.

"Jealous Mind" would be Stardust's only No. 1 hit single during the course of his musical career, but several of his other songs would also show significant chart success, including his 1981 hit "Pretend" and the 1984 song "I Feel Like Buddy Holly."

Though the song originally released as a single in 1973, "Jealous Mind" was released as the fifth track on Stardust's debut album The Untouchable (1974), which also features his first single "My Coo Ca Choo" as the opening track.

In 1985, Stardust competed in A Song for Europe, which was the U.K.'s national selection competition show that determined who would represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest. Stardust finished in third place with his entry "The Clock on the Wall."

Stardust also acted alongside his musical career, taking roles in soap operas such as Hollyoaks and theater performances like Godspell, David Copperfield: The Musical and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

After an over-40-year-long career, Stardust died in 2014 at the age of 72, just weeks before he was supposed to release his sixth studio album Alvin, which was also his first album in 30 years. A second posthumous album, Behind the Wheel, was released in 2021, ensuring that Stardust's legacy would continue long after his death.
