One Insider Belives the Bears Will Get Compensation For Losing Ian Cunningham

It sounds like the Ian Cunningham draft pick compensation saga is coming to an end soon.

And perhaps, for the Chicago Bears, a happy ending could be on the horizon.

Will the Bears Get Compensatory Draft Picks For Losing Ian Cunningham?

While discussing a whirlwind week of Bears football on ESPN Radio AM-1000, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin offered an update regarding the timeline of when the NFL traditionally awards compensatory picks. It comes around the 1 hour, 35 minute mark in this live link via Twitter if you want to check it out. But the quick version of this is that Cronin points out that it tends to happen at the start of the new league year, which officially kicks off on Wednesday. In other words, we will know by next week what picks the Bears (and the league’s other 31 teams) will have in the 2026 NFL Draft.

As for the possibility of Chicago’s football team netting compensatory draft picks for losing former Assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham to a promotion with the Atlanta Falcons, Cronin shared her belief that the Bears will get those picks:

“I actually do. The precedent here — and other front offices have dealt with this, too — with the structure and the power structure of who’s actually making the football decisions. Anytime Matt Ryan gets in front of a microphone, he’s saying, ‘I’m not the final say in personnel. That’s Ian Cunningham.’ It feels counterintuitive to the NFL’s policy of the Rooney Rule, and the progress for minority candidates. You develop them in one place, they go somewhere else, they get their draft picks for the team that they left. It feels like it’s not in the spirit of the rule if the Bears don’t get their picks.”

    Hey, that sounds logical!

Back in February, the NFL gave an explanation for why the Bears weren’t set to get compensatory picks for losing Ian Cunningham to the Falcons. It wasn’t a good explanation. It wasn’t even sensible. But it was an explanation. But since then, Bears General Manager Ryan Poles has said he and the team have taken the proper steps through the right channels to make an appeal for compensatory picks. It makes for a fascinating story to follow. And when you think about how valuable those picks could be for a team that has as many holes to fill as Poles’, you can understand why the team is angling for compensation.

In the end, we’ll keep following this story and share updates when they become available. Hopefully, the league gives the Bears the picks as compensation for losing Ian Cunningham and allows us to close the loop on this storyline.
