Downtown Greeley will be rife with Irish charm next Saturday afternoon. Don’t forget to wear green.
Greeley’s 12th annual Blarney on the Block celebration will run from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, March 14 on the 8th and 9th street plazas.
“Everyone is Irish that day,” Downtown Development Authority Office & Event Manager Karen Baumgartner said. “So we invite everyone to join us down on the plaza. We have music, we have Irish step dancers, we have green juice and lucky charms for the kids — though the adults can grab some too — and we’ll have a short parade.”
The event will kick off at 2 p.m. with the McTeggart Irish Dancers on the 9th Street Plaza. Go-cup services will also kick off and last throughout the day, allowing bar patrons to carry drinks throughout the 9th Street Plaza.
“You can grab your beverage and go out on the plaza and listen to the band,” Baumgartner said.
At 2:30 p.m., the parade will get underway, starting on 9th Avenue on the east side of the DoubleTree Hotel. It will travel through both the 8th and 9th street plazas. It is a “small-town” parade, according to the Downtown Development Authority, which means the public is invited to decorate their bikes, scooter or just themselves, and join in on the fun.
“We’ve had several families over the past couple years that come down and put their kids on a bike or decorate a wagon,” Baumgartner said.
A PT Cruiser club and a British motoring club will be in the parade, and Westridge Animal Hospital will bring Irish wolfhounds to march along in the parade.
Baumgartner asks anyone who plans on marching in the parade to register ahead of time by emailing her at [email protected].
The Northern Colorado Caledonia Pipe Band will serenade the parade goers, then continue playing on 9th Street once the parade wraps up.
“They’ll walk around and play at different businesses for a while after the parade,” Baumgartner said.
One of those businesses is Ellie’s Corner Shop, which will host Blarney on the Block’s first pie-eating contest at 3 p.m.
Shortly after that wraps up — at 3:30 p.m. — Potcheen, an Irish pub band, will start performing, providing the soundtrack for the rest of the event.
“Everyone is welcome to come down, enjoy the dancers, the bagpipers, the green beer, the live entertainment,” Baumgartner said. “We’ll all just be there to have a good time.”
