After morning rain and storms led to heavy downpours and ground stops at Chicago airports, another round of storms could be on the horizon, and this one brings a greater threat for severe conditions.
While there is still some uncertainty surrounding if and where this round of storms will develop, any that do could bring threats of heavy rain, damaging winds and possibly even tornadoes.
Here’s when to be prepared:
Friday afternoon
While there will be some dry hours through the early afternoon, the timing for the next wave spans several hours through the afternoon and evening.
The storms could move in as early as 2 p.m., though where exactly they will develop is not yet clear.
The line of storms will remain scattered, and “not everyone will see it,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said.
Roman said the risk for severe storms comes as temperatures approach the 60s to the west and the upper 70s to the south.
“Especially with the heating of the day, one or two stronger storms by late afternoon and evening hours,” Roman said.
According to the Climate Prediction Center, counties to the north and west will be under a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five. Chicago and counties to the south and east will be under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one.
Friday evening
The severe threat will continue through around 9 p.m. Friday, though more storms are possible in a third wave afterwards.
Overnight Friday into Saturday
Late Friday night, more scattered showers and storms with lightning, heavy downpours and gusty winds were expected, lasting through about 4 a.m. Saturday
Rain will come to an end Saturday, Roman said, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s followed by sunnier conditions and 60-degree temperatures Sunday.
