Brendon McCullum OUT! Michael Vaughan names next England coach after T20 WC exit

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for some changes so that the England cricket team can win major tournaments in the future. During a discussion with Cricbuzz, the former batter suggests that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) should consider a shuffle in the set-up.

Michael Vaughan’s comments came after the second semifinal of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. England crashed out of the tournament after being defeated by India by 7 runs. Under the coaching of Brandon McCullum, the Three Lions failed to claim any major trophies in recent time including the T20 World Cup, and The Ashes 2025-26.

The 51-year-old acknowledged that the England cricket team has played some exciting cricket, but they failed to build a trophy-winning momentum. Whether it was a multi-national tournament or a bilateral series, the result remains the same.

“English cricket has to be honest and open for conversation to accept that over the course of the last three years, we've had some incredibly exciting moments, but we're becoming the bridesmaids. We're not winning”, Michael Vaughan criticized the team in strong words.

“We haven't won an Ashes series, we haven't beaten India home or away, we've not won an ICC event, so we're poor in the Caribbean when we got to the semis beating nobody, that was a poor performance. The Champions Trophy last year, we didn't win a game, and now in this World Cup, we've probably just gone beyond par”, he made his comments more eloquent.

Michael Vaughan asks the ECB to take lessons from Barcelona

To change the scenario, the veteran asks the cricket board to make some discussion to take some major steps. Vaughan’s comments were for those who were involved in the decision-making process. He prescribes minimal changes instead of refreshing the entire team.

“So there's some honest conversations that need to happen. Do I want the whole setup ripped up? Absolutely not. But do I want the ECB and those who have been involved with the decision-making process to get around the table and understand they've made a lot of mistakes, done a few good things as well, but accept the mistakes and you can move forward”, he added.

As the discussion progressed, Vaughan’s point of view sharpened. He talked about Barcelona, how Barcelona picked up its coaches from its own ecosystem.

“There will need to be the odd personnel change, and that might be in the backroom team. I look at the Barcelona football method, where Barcelona seems to always promote from within. So they kind of build up all these coaches, and when a manager goes there's almost like a conveyor belt waiting, there you go, there's another one”, the former captain explained.

Who will be the next head coach for the England cricket team?

The former cricketer, now a cricket expert, exposed the system of English cricket. If Brendon McCullum steps out from his position in the future, then who will take on the task? Michael Vaughan raised concerns.

“I worry in English cricket that we've created a management group that it's almost as if one goes, they all have to go because they're all in the same kind of mould. Now I think if you're doing your job really, really well, your time in office as an England cricket coach, if you stepped out of office, there should be a group that's waiting to take you over."

"At the minute, if Baz McCullum says look, I've had enough, I'm like, going well, who's going to do it? There's no one there waiting, and that, for me, is a little bit of a fault of our system that we've allowed this to happen", Michael Vaughan said.
