An Iowa girl’s basketball game ended in remarkable fashion on Thursday night.
In a state semifinal game, DC-Grimes found itself trailing Norwalk 42-38 with about 35 seconds remaining. DC-Grimes was set to inbound the ball underneath its own basket — and that’s when chaos began.
DC-Grimes’ Ava Smid quickly scored a layup to cut the deficit to 2 points. Then, with a running clock, Smid picked off back-to-back Norwalk in-bounds passes and scored immediate layups to give her team the lead.
Smid also earned an and-one opportunity on the second layup, although she missed the free throw. By the time the wild sequence ended, there was just 21 seconds left in the game and DC-Grimes had its first lead of the evening.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was Smid who corralled the rebound with under 9 seconds to go. From there, DC-Grimes was able to close out the game with free throw shooting and secure a 47-42 victory.
DC-Grimes will play in the Iowa 4A state title game on Saturday.
