There was an overwhelming theme from the current members of the Chicago Blackhawks after practice on Thursday. Ben Pope wrote about it for the Chicago Sun-Times. Mark Lazerus wrote about it for The Athletic, too.
The young Blackhawks hated seeing their friends and teammates being traded away. They hated seeing valuable players who can help a team in the playoffs — hopefully win a championship — leaving Chicago because the postseason isn’t happening here. And the young Blackhawks want this to be the last time for a long time that the Blackhawks are sellers at the trade deadline.
Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno said it as plainly as anyone:
“That’s probably the message that’s been heard the loudest the past few days here for the group. They’re getting tired of being in this spot. So, hopefully it’s a motivating factor for years to come.”
Here’s one quote from Connor Bedard (and video of him speaking with the media Thursday):
“Two weeks ago, me, [Colton Dach] and [Ryan] Greener were on vacation, talking about, ‘After we win the Cup, we’re going to go back.’ It’s hard.”
“It’s motivating that this is the last year that we’re in a spot where we’re moving guys that help us win… That’s a shitty feeling. [We’ll] just try to not let that happen [again].”

— Nick McCardell (@UKhoops1_BBN) March 5, 2026 The Blackhawks might not be done selling, either. Foligno continues to be prominently linked to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Emily Kaplan of ESPN mentioned Minnesota has kicked the tires on Nick and Marcus becoming teammates. We’ll see if he’s still on the roster when the Hawks take the ice to face the Canucks tonight. I’ll also note that, the way teams have been throwing around decent draft assets for specific role players over the past 36 hours or so, I wouldn’t be shocked if there were calls coming on Ilya Mikheyev tonight. The top teams in the Western Conference — Colorado, Minnesota, Dallas and Vegas — have all been actively adding. Edmonton made two deals with the Blackhawks already. Even without the Blackhawks being able to retain salary any longer, his skill package is exactly what teams want/need in the postseason. Foligno is NOT a fan of the NHL playing games on the day of the trade deadline. I asked him about it after practice yesterday. His response was pretty clear:“I always thought that was stupid personally,” Foligno said. “I just think it’s such a distraction for everybody because regardless, you’re watching it no matter even if you’re on the block or not. And I just think it’s a weird day and I don’t know why the league hasn’t decided just to make it a practice day for everybody. I think it would help a lot of the teams travel. … I think it’s a stupid thing that we play. Even for fans or guys that make plans to have family, there’s just so much that goes into that game and unforeseen circumstances. So yeah, it’s a weird day. I mean, it’s part of being a pro, but I don’t know why it has to be a game on that day. I mean, just make it a certain day every year and go with it.”
Nick Foligno told us when he was young he was supposed to be in a deadline trade for… Marian Hossa… to go back to Ottawa from Atlanta. The deal fell thru last minute and he had to play a game against Boston “You’re welcome for those Cups” he laughed #Blackhawks
— Tab Bamford (@The1Tab) March 5, 2026 Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson is schedule to speak with the media at 4:30 PM CT today. New Blackhawks forward Andrew Mangiapane, who will be on the NHL roster when his visa paperwork clears, will wear No. 26. The Blackhawks sent Kevin Korchinski back to Rockford on Thursday. It makes sense that they would only carry seven healthy defensemen, and Wyatt Kaiser is expected to be back in the lineup tonight against the Canucks. Now feels like a good time to post my annual reminder: there may be other guys — Ethan Del Mastro? Sam Rinzel? — who are “demoted” just before the trade deadline this afternoon. Why? They have to be on the AHL roster at the time of the NHL Trade Deadline to be eligible to be sent down for the AHL postseason.Per NHL rules, a player must be on an AHL roster at the #NHLTradeDeadline (3 pm ET Friday) in order to be eligible to be sent down from the NHL at any time for the rest of the regular season or the #CalderCup Playoffs.
— AHL Communications (@AHLPR) March 5, 2026 In the OHL last night, Marek Vanacker had two assists for Brantford in a 5-3 win. He now has 72 points — including an OHL-leading 42 goals — in 53 games this season. According to Sportico, Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has reached an agreement to sell 12.5% of the Hurricanes at a $2.66 billion valuation. The Anaheim Ducks signed forward Ryan Poehling to a four-year extension that has a $3.75M cap hit. Last night, Kings captain Anze Kopitar became just the 25th player in NHL history to reach 1,500 career games played. He’s only the eighth to do it for a single franchise. The 25th player in NHL history to reach 1,500 games played! Congratulations to Anze Kopitar on a milestone night! pic.twitter.com/1X8xEYUohF
