Waves of strong to severe thunderstorms with lots of lightning, heavy downpours, hail and strong winds loomed over the Chicago forecast Friday, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, with the first round expected to hit during part of the morning rush hour commute.
As of early Friday morning, the system was mostly in Iowa but “sneaking” into western Illinois, live Doppler 5 radar showed.
“Lots of lightning associated with this system,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman warned.
The storms moving in come as the entire Chicago area was once again under a dense fog advisory, with heavy, thick fog leading to very low visibility. Photos and video from roads and tollway cameras across the city and the suburbs showed fuzzy and blurry scenes under street and traffic lights.
The dense fog advisory will expire at 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Winds picking up early will help “push” the fog out quicker this morning than Thursday, Roman said.
Storm timing
The first round of storms with heavy rain and lightning was expected to hit western counties about 8 a.m., Roman said. About 10 a.m., the rain would be more widespread, hitting DeKalb, Waukegan and Woodstock before moving into Chicago.
The morning storms may not turn severe, Roman said. About 12 p.m., some dry time was expected.
About 2 p.m., another round of storms will move in. Those carry a higher risk of turning strong or severe, Roman said, with temperatures approaching the 60s to the west and the upper 70s to the south.
“Especially with the heating of the day, one or two stronger storms by late afternoon and evening hours,” Roman said.
According to the Climate Prediction Center, counties to the north and west will be under a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five. Chicago and counties to the south and east will be under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one.
“Some of these thunderstorms may become severe this afternoon and late tonight,” the NWS said, with large hail, damaging winds and heavy downpours all possible.
“There is also a risk for tornadoes with any thunderstorms that do develop this afternoon,” the NWS advised.
The storms however will remain scattered, Roman said, and not all parts will see stormy weather.
Late Friday night, more scattered showers and storms with lightning, heavy downpours and gusty winds were expected, lasting through about 4 a.m.
Rain will come to an end Saturday, Roman said, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s followed by sunnier conditions and 60-degree temperatures Sunday.
