The Ducks are buyers at the trade deadline again, and they made a major purchase late Thursday night, acquiring Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson in exchange for a conditional first-round draft pick and a 2027 third-rounder.
Carlson, 36, is enjoying one of the most productive seasons of his career with 46 points in 55 games, only a slight dip from his peak production between 2017 and 2022.
In that span, he was the Norris Trophy runner-up, in 2020, and the Capitals won the franchise’s lone championship, in 2018. Since he entered the league in the 2009-10 season, only three defensemen have compiled more points (Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns and Victor Hedman).
He ranks among the consecrated Caps defenseman – think Rod Langway, Sergei Gonchar and Kevin Hatcher – and unlike the other big-name blue-liners in franchise history, he won a Stanley Cup.
Now, Alex Ovechkin’s longest-tenured teammate, who had spent his entire 17-year career in D.C., heads to the O.C. as the Ducks chase their first playoff berth in eight years and their first Pacific Division title in nine seasons.
“John Carlson brings leadership, character, a high hockey IQ and a presence to our lineup,” Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said. “We are very excited to add a Stanley Cup winner to complement our group and make a big push down the stretch.”
The conditions of the draft pick are essentially lottery protection. Should the Ducks fail to qualify for this postseason, they would be able to retain whatever shot they end up with at projected top overall pick Gavin McKenna and instead confer their 2027 first-rounder.
Carlson, who was born in Natick, Mass., but grew up in New Jersey, has represented the United States internationally, winning World Junior Championships gold. He also competed in both the Olympics (2014) and World Cup of Hockey (2016).
Carlson is in the final year of an eight-year, $64 million contract and is part of an ongoing selloff by Washington that also included center Nic Dowd, who was shipped to Pacific-leading Vegas early on Thursday. A right-handed shooter, Carlson will join a right side that includes captain Radko Gudas and veteran Jacob Trouba, both of whom are also in the last season of their deals.
