Team India defeated England narrowly by seven runs in the second semifinal of the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 5. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson secured the Player-of-the-Match award after thrashing England's bowlers in a high-scoring encounter.
His knock set a great platform for the Men in Blue to reach a massive total of 253/7 in 20 overs, which is the highest-ever total in a T20 World Cup knockout clash. India will take on New Zealand in the summit clash of the tournament at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.
During the post-match press conference, Samson was asked about missing out on scoring hundreds in his past two innings. Samson had scored an undefeated 97 against the West Indies before adding 89 runs against England.
Samson stated that he was grateful for the runs he scored for the team rather than focusing on milestones. He added that his focus is entirely on winning his first World Cup final on Sunday.
"I didn’t actually miss the centuries. One was 97 and the other was 89. Wasn’t it even a bigger thing? Very grateful for that! We are batting till No. 8. It’s a long batting order! I tend to play according to the team's requirements," Samson said.
"Either you play well if it’s your day or just support others to play well. One more to go! Then I would feel lighter," he added.

Sanju Samson Breaks Rohit Sharma's Huge Six-Hitting Record
In the semifinal against England, Samson smashed seven massive sixes. The right-handed batter smashed 16 maximums in just four matches in the 2026 tournament.
Samson became the Indian player with the most sixes in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. The Kerala-born cricketer surpassed Rohit Sharma, who had previously hit 15 maximums during India's title-winning run in the 2024 edition.
Samson has scored 232 runs in four matches at an incredible average of 77.33 and a massive strike rate of 201.73, including two half-centuries. Notably, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan opened the batting for India earlier in the tournament.
India Survive Despite Jacob Bethell's Sensational Century
The Harry Brook-led England side fought until the final over of the run chase. Jacob Bethell almost took his side home by smashing a sensational 105 off just 48 balls. He registered the highest individual score in a T20 World Cup knockout game, but it came in a losing cause.
Bethell added a dangerous 77-run partnership off 39 balls with Will Jacks, who scored 35 off 20 balls, for the fifth wicket to keep England in the hunt.
However, Jasprit Bumrah held his nerve in the pressure moments during the death overs. He was the pick of the bowlers with impressive figures of 1/33 in four overs. Bumrah delivered a match-defining 17th over, conceding just six runs when the equation was 45 needed off 18 balls.
