Four-star recruit Jaxon Richardson announced his commitment to Alabama Thursday on social media.
The 6-foot-6 forward is a unanimous top 30 prospect across all major recruiting outlets and chose the Crimson Tide over Creighton, USC and Ole Miss.
His father, Jason, was drafted fifth overall in 1999 and played 13 seasons in the association, averaging 17.1 career points per game on 37% from three. At the height of his career, the elder Richardson averaged over 20 points per game and won the Slam Dunk Contest twice.
His athleticism seems to have carried over to his son.
“[Jaxon is] arguably the best athlete in high school basketball,” CBS Sports’ director of basketball scouting Adam Finkelstein said.
Head coach Nate Oats’ analytics-based system, along with a long-time relationship back when the staff recruited his older brother, Jase, were what ultimately won over the Las Vegas native.
“Coach Oats is a math guy like me, analytical,” Richardson said. “I have known him since he recruited my brother. He has been close to our family for a while.”
His athleticism will work well in a defensive system that constantly switches and an offense that wants to get out in transition.
Richardson was recently named a McDonald’s All-American, one of the most prestigious honors a high schooler can earn.
Alabama jumped up to the No. 5 class in the country in On3’s team recruiting rankings after the commitment of Richardson, currently trailing just Duke, Arkansas, North Carolina and USC. He joins Qayden Samuels and Tarris Bouie in Alabama’s 2026 class.
