HILTON, N.Y. — A Hilton High School junior studying abroad in Amman, Jordan, has been affected by the ongoing Iran War, her parents said.
Aleyna Mooney has been in Jordan since August. While Jordan is not a target, it sits directly unde the path of missiles exchanged between Iran and Israel. Her parents, Samra and Ted Mooney, are now anxiously waiting for her return.
“Scared. Fearful.” Samra Mooney said regarding their reaction to the conflict.
Ted Mooney said, “It feels a lot longer than a week ago when it started. But, yeah, we first got the text in the middle of the night and turned the TV on to see what was going on. So, yeah, we were definitely a little more nervous than she was.”
Their daughter has been studying abroad for months without issue until the conflict began.
“She’s really close to Israel. So any time, you know, there’s the missiles that are going from Iran to Israel, Jordan does interject and shoot those down. And so when those are flying, the sirens are going off in Jordan, and she’s even seeing the missiles flying over in Jordan,” Ted Mooney said.
Samra Mooney added, “She was in a shelter in place. And I’m not sure if it was for her specifically because she was with the [study abroad] program or for the entire country.”
Ted Mooney expressed his anticipation for his daughter’s safe return, saying, “I’m looking at what time should she be in the air and past Israel. And then that’ll be the, I guess, the time of relief for us.”
Samra Mooney said, “My alarm is set for four in the morning to check the flight status and where she is in the air and, know that she’s taken off and on her way home.”
Aleyna Mooney is expected to return to Rochester late tomorrow night. News10NBC plans to be there when she arrives.
