One of Chicagos toughest reservations is a tavern-style pizzeria in West Town

I have a theory. The longer you have to wait for food, the more delicious it becomes.

Through heat waves and snow storms, Chicago has a tradition for waiting in long lines for a restaurant: Kasama, Del Sur Bakery, Au Cheval. In the last months of Hot Dougs, wait times exceeded two hours, and stretched to over five hours in its final days.

There’s interesting psychology at play here: Humans want what they can’t get.

The visuals of a long queue (played out on Instagram and TikTok) are social proofing. And since time is money, the dollar amount on deliciousness surely exceeds the price on the menu, right?

All this to say, Pizz’amici has benefitted from the cursed blessing of the long restaurant line.

Since opening in late 2024, reservations to the West Town pizzeria, located at 1215 W. Grand Ave, have consistently been booked full weeks in advance. On weekends, wait times for walk-ins typically exceed two hours. For those willing to wait, there are some solid bars nearby to pass the time.

What’s remarkable about Pizz’amici is that the buzz hasn’t died down. There’s been no initial wave — it’s been sustained, prolonged popularity.

Why? The pizza is really great. The sourdough tavern-style pies are a respectful nod to the tradition set by the Vito & Nick’s and Villa Novas of the world. Then they add on top-notch ingredients, such as housemade shaved Italian beef, a natural dance partner to the punchy giardiniera from J.P. Graziano’s.

Pizz’amici is the brainchild of a Chicago pizza power couple. Cecily and Billy Federighi launched their pizza entrepreneurship with Eat Free Pizza, where they gave away free pizzas (for research and development purposes) from their Ukrainian Village home kitchen. Then came Pizza Fried Chicken Ice Cream in Bridgeport, followed by Kim’s Uncle Pizza in Westmont. Both those businesses were predominantly takeout.

Now at Pizz’amici, there’s a dining room to sit down and relax, and a large-enough kitchen to expand beyond pizza and into salads, meatballs, and focaccia.

So is it worth the wait?

    Yes.

Give it a try from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
