Blackhawks Captain Nick Foligno Talks About His Future Ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline

The Chicago Blackhawks have already moved on from their two permanent assistant captains this week. As Friday afternoon’s NHL Trade Deadline approaches, captain Nick Foligno is now trying to mentally deal with the finality of his Blackhawks career — whether that’s before the deadline or at the end of the regular season.

Foligno’s name has been in trade rumors recently, most notably tying him to a potential homecoming with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He spoke with the media after practice on Thursday — maybe his final practice as the captain in Chicago — about the reality of the trade deadline.

Imagine #Blackhawks Nick Foligno is in a similar spot as Jeff Petry, just acquired by Minnesota. Both well respected veterans who want to compete.Foligno is open to moving for right fit, and like the Panthers, Chicago will do right by their captain to try and make it happen.

As of that moment, his status was the same: he’s the captain of the Blackhawks.

“[Blackhawks GM] Kyle [Davidson] and I have talked and we’re going through that process,” Foligno said. “As of right now, I’m Chicago Blackhawk, so I’m fully invested in what we’re doing, but I’ve obviously had that honest conversation and we’ll see where it goes.”

Foligno said his wife is good friends with the wives of Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson, both of whom were traded to the Oilers already this week. And seeing them move on is bittersweet because of what they meant to the Blackhawks organization, the other players in the room and the community — but also excitement that those two guys get a chance to show what they can do under the bright lights of the postseason. Finally.

“I think that’s exactly the word you use in this situation because for a guy like Murph, it is bittersweet because you love him and what he’s meant to this organization and this city and how he’s coming and just been a real great ambassador for the Blackhawks through probably a tough time and tough transition. And he’s always kept his head up and led the right way. And so to see him get an opportunity with a really good team is gratifying for us all.

“And then you see what Jason Dickinson’s meant to this group. And that was a tough guy to lose just with the way he’s connected with every guy and how much he matters, the way he led, the minutes that he ate that were hard minutes and not so fun times here. You’re thrilled for a guy like him too that gets a chance to really slot into an area that really makes a lot of sense when you look at it.”

There was a bit of a notable past tense element to the way Foligno spoke. And there were some emotions as he talked about what his new home in Chicago has meant to him after nearly two decades in the NHL. He’s been a father figure to some players and a big brother to others.

He’s also accepted the unique responsibility of serving as the first captain of the Blackhawks after Jonathan Toews, who wore the C longer than any player in franchise history.

“It’s tough actually. Yeah. It’s tough,” Foligno said. “I’ve made it no surprise how much I care about this group. And especially as a guy who’s led this group for a few years, you feel weird when you have those hard conversations, but it’s the reality of where we’re sitting, right? And when you have expiring contracts or the age I’m at or there’s always a personal thing that you go through too, where you want to still compete and battle and win. And so that’s the fight that you have.

“I believe in this group so much and it’s been an absolute honor to be the captain here. So I’m still fully committed to that until told otherwise. But yeah, there’s a competitor inside you too that wants to be playing meaningful games.”
