GATES, N.Y. — Members of American Legion Doud Post 98 gathered in Gates today, celebrating new shadow boxes memorializing veterans in the Legion. News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with several veterans, including those who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, to understand their feelings about the current conflict in Iran.
“War is never good,” said Dick Lippa, a U.S. Army veteran. “Nobody really wins. We all lose something.”
Frank Ricotta Jr., a two-time Vietnam veteran, expressed his concerns about the uncertainties of war. “When you see a war — and it’s started — God knows what’s going to happen after that day started, how much more it’s going to escalate.”
The veterans gathered at Gates Town Hall for lunch, bingo, and to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary. Many of the members described their camaraderie as a “brotherhood.”
“We’re only veterans. We’re only people. But we’re people that love our country. And this is the dang best country in the world,” said John Noto, a U.S. Army veteran.
When asked about the current war, Bill Birecree shared his apprehension. “It’s a very scary time. It’s just scary. All those guys and girls over there… I don’t know,” he said. His advice to them: “Keep your head down.”
Ricotta added, “It bothers me a lot because it, it’s– there’s no reason for our country to go all the way to Iran and start a war. Why?”
The event also recognized Paul Schneider, a 105-year-old World War II veteran, who helped unveil the shadow boxes. The room joined him in singing “God Bless America.” Schneider shared a heartfelt message for the troops: “Thank you for your service. That’s all you can say — thank you for your service, and come home safely.”
In a surprise announcement, the town named Paul Schneider the Grand Marshal of Gates’ 250th Anniversary of America Celebration Parade this summer.
