Some Cubs prospect notes for you today …
Chicago Cubs prospects are set to face prospects from the Padres system at 7:05pm CT on March 21 at Sloan Park for their Spring Breakout game. Today, MLB announced the player pools for each organization, which is just kind of an initial layer of eligibility before the final rosters come just before the games (this way there is some flexibility because of the WBC and for injuries). The initial Cubs player pool:PITCHERS (15)Brandon Birdsell, RHPBrooks Caple, RHPJostin Florentino, RHPGrant Kipp, RHPJackson Kirkpatrick, RHPRiley Martin, LHPLuis Martinez-Gomez, RHPNazier Mulé, RHPDominick Reid, RHPErian Rodriguez, RHPYenrri Rojas, RHPWill Sanders, RHPJP Wheat, RHPJaxon Wiggins, RHPKaleb Wing, RHP
CATCHERS (4)Ariel Armas, COwen Ayers, CMoisés Ballesteros, CJustin Stransky, C
INFIELDERS (11)Edgar Alvarez, 1BJuan Cabada, 2B/OFAngel Cepeda, INFFernando Cruz, SS/2BJonathon Long, 1BCole Mathis, 1B/3BPedro Ramirez, 3B/2BJefferson Rojas, SS/2BTy Southisene, 2BJuan Tomas, SSJames Triantos, 2B/OF
OUTFIELDERS (10)Derik Alcantara, OFKevin Alcántara, OFBrett Bateman, OFEthan Conrad, OFJosiah Hartshorn, OFKane Kepley, OFAlexey Lumpuy, OFChristian Olivo, OFKade Snell, OFCarter Trice, OF
If you’re wondering how they came up with that list, it’s the MLB Pipeline top-30, plus 10 players selected by the Cubs to replace prospects who cannot otherwise participate (injured or on the 40-man and elect not to play). So it’s a good bet that any of the included non-top-30 guys will be participating, while I would generally not bet on the 40-man roster guys with a shot to make the big league roster to participate. We’ll find out more in a couple weeks, and then we get to watch. In their take on the many Spring Breakout player pools, Baseball America gives a who-could-break-out shout to Kane Kepley:“Kepley was one of the best-performing draftees last summer, as he hit .299/.481/.433 over 28 games after being taken in the 2025 second round by the Cubs. He also walked nearly twice as often as he struck out. Kepley is a toolsy outfielder with speed, advanced hitting and on-base skills to go along with plus defense in center field. He’s likely to make impressive plays on both sides of the ball in the Cubs’ Spring Breakout game this season.”
And fellow 2025 drafted outfielder Ethan Conrad gets a mention at BA among the top prospects who could play in the game without having yet made their pro debut:“With a full season to showcase his skills, Conrad might not have been in play for the Cubs at the No. 17 pick. Instead, a shoulder injury cut short his season and Chicago pounced. At his best, the Wake Forest product projects for above-average tools in every category except arm strength, which grades as a potentially average skill. If those predictions come true, he’ll quickly shoot up the Cubs’ prospect ranks and onto the cusp of the Top 100. A strong Spring Breakout performance could serve as a springboard.”
Jefferson Rojas’s titanic 438-foot blast yesterday turned plenty of heads, and I’ve gotta say that this visual comparison is inspired:Jefferson Rojas home run comparison: Justin Upton (left) vs. Rojas (right) pic.twitter.com/KY1yjsR8uu
— Brendan Miller (@brendan_cubs) March 5, 2026 Folks may recall that Justin Upton fell off pretty hard after age-30, but here’s what he did until then: .268/.348/.478/121 wRC+, 35.6 WAR. The comp is not actually a comp, mind you, but it certainly is fun to dream on that kind of offense from a capable shortstop as opposed to a solid corner outfielder. Also, as much as a random Spring Training home run on a meatball does not matter or prove anything of consequence, it is nice to be reminded/confirmed/whatever that Rojas has THAT kind of power in him. He’s not expected to be a 30+ home run hitter in the big leagues, but simply having that kind of contact quality in his tool bag could help him really break out soon (because he’s already got the excellent plate discipline). As Craig Counsell put it to the Sun-Times: “Jefferson’s made a great impression. Just being able to see Jefferson two years ago, and where we’re at right now — wow. … We’ve got a good offensive player here that’s going to impact the baseball and do some damage. He’s going to be a dangerous hitter.” And from Cubs hitting coach Dustin Kelly (Sun-Times): “A lot of the work that [Rojas has] done down in the minor leagues is getting into his legs and using his lower half and creating a little bit of posture. So, his swing path is really cleaned up, and just the overall efficiency of his swing, where it is right now, is generating some output. He’s hitting the ball really hard — much harder than what I thought or expected from him, especially in a major-league camp at 20 years old.” Jaxon Wiggins joined Rojas in looking mighty impressive yesterday:Jaxon Wiggins showing off the arsenal. 97 mph fastball90 mph change up81 mph curve ball pic.twitter.com/veKIucp5CM
