So What Will the Blackhawks’ New Lineup Look Like?

In the wake of trading veterans Connor Murphy and Jason Dickinson — both to the Edmonton Oilers in separate transactions — the Blackhawks have two significant holes to fill in their lineup. While the Hawks have already played one game without Murphy, Friday night will be the first without Dickinson.

The Blackhawks practiced on Thursday, taking the ice roughly 27 hours before Friday afternoon’s NHL Trade Deadline. Here’s a little insight into what we’re seeing the lineup evolve into with two veterans gone.

And… the Blackhawks might not be done dealing yet, either.

    Blackhawks Forward Line Changes

The Blackhawks have a number of young players who have played center, both early in their NHL careers and at previous stops on their hockey journey. Ryan Greene and Oliver Moore could be the most logical players to fill Dickinson’s spot centering the third line.

With Dickinson gone, the Blackhawks will need to adjust the penalty kill up front. He’s been a critical part of that unit since Jonathan Toews left, skating against the toughest competition most nights and serving as the center on the NHL’s top PK. I would expect Greene and Landon Slaggert to continue seeing increased use in that regard, with Frank Nazar and Moore potentially seeing more short-handed ice time as well.

After practice on Thursday — the day before the deadline — Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said whenever he clears the visa/immigration process to be available, Andrew Mangiapane will join the Blackhawks at the NHL level. He was apparently recalled immediately when he was acquired. They haven’t figured out how/where he’ll slot into the lineup wuite yet.

Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno spoke with us for a while after practice on Monday. He wasn’t certain what the future holds for him, but again acknowledged that he has had conversations with management about the coming hours and what that might bring.

At practice on Thursday, the Blackhawks lines — for what it’s worth before the deadline — were:

Ryan Greene — Connor Bedard — André Burakovsky Ryan Donato — Frank Nazar — Teuvo TeräväinenTyler Bertuzzi — Oliver Moore — Ilya Mikheyev Landon Slaggert — Nick Foligno — Sam Lafferty

    Blackhawks’ Young Blue Line

In Tuesday night’s loss in Winnipeg, we saw increased roles for the three remaining right-handed defensemen on the roster — and some situational use tweaks for others. Sam Rinzel skated 20:12 of five-on-five ice time Tuesday, his highest mark of the season.

Alex Vlasic and Louis Crevier saw significant increases in defensive-zone faceoffs. Both set new season highs, with Vlasic getting 18 and Crevier 15 starts off an defensive-zone draw.

And we saw Artyom Levshunov move onto the second penalty kill unit. Ethan Del Mastro was in the lineup. The Blackhawks didn’t spend much time short-handed, but I suspect we could see him potentially helping the penalty kill as well.

How the defensive pairs play once Wyatt Kaiser is fully back in the rotation will be interesting as well. He skated with Rinzel on Thursday, with Levshunov staying with Matt Grzelcyk. Blashill said Kaiser is tracking to return to the lineup on Friday night when the Canucks visit the Blackhawks.
