NFL Insiders Hint the Bears Aren’t Done — What’s Next?

The Chicago Bears made their first splashy move of the offseason by trading DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills. And while the deal cannot be finalized until March 13, the early details are encouraging. When it comes to the Bears’ side of the ledger, they are receiving a 2026 second-round pick and clearing $16.5 million worth of cap space. And for Moore, he gets to take his talents to Buffalo, catch passes from an MVP-caliber quarterback in Josh Allen, and reunite with Bills Head Coach Joe Brady, who was with Moore in Carolina.

This is a big deal. And we will have more about it later. But for now, I can’t stop thinking about what it means for the Bears as we approach the start of the new league year — especially after seeing this post on Twitter/X from league insider Jordan Schultz:

I do not get the sense the #Bears are done on the trade market…. t.co/FcTDonWcFk

Do I love vagueposting? No. Am I intrigued? Yes!

What’s next for the Bears after trading DJ Moore?

In reporting on the Bears finalizing the DJ Moore trade, Chicago Sun-Times reporter Patrick Finley discusses some notable names the team can target after clearing Moore’s cap number off the roster. Let’s discuss…

MAXX CROSBY, EDGE DEFENDER — If you are reading this, then you probably already know that the Chicago Bears need defensive line help in the worst way. You also probably know that Maxx Crosby is the highest-profile edge defender who could be on the trade market. The Raiders haven’t shown any inclination that they want to trade Crosby, but the Bears are reportedly “a team to watch” here. But a messy Vegas situation isn’t helping matters. And that Crosby hosted Bears quarterback Caleb Williams on his podcast recently only further fuels the trade speculation.

In getting a second-round pick from the Bills in exchange for DJ Moore, there is a part of me that wonders if that is the type of sweetener that could be added to consummate a potential Crosby trade. At a minimum, that deal cleared necessary cap space and opened the door to the possibility of another major trade.

TREY HENDRICKSON, EDGE DEFENDER — If not a Maxx Crosby trade, then perhaps Trey Hendrickson makes sense as a Bears target in free agency. After not getting the Franchise Tag treatment from the Cincinnati Bengals, Hendrickson will hit free agency next week. Between the positional fit and his connection with Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen (who he played for while with the New Orleans Saints), it is impossible to ignore the potential fit.

Unlike Crosby, acquiring Hendrickson would cost only cash considerations and cap space. Let me be clear. Crosby is a better player. But it is fair to debate whether the Bears are better off having Hendrickson (and draft capital) or Crosby (at the cost of losing draft picks). For what it’s worth, Crosby and Hendrickson aren’t the only worthwhile potential Bears targets along the defensive line. Teammate Patrick Flowers has a rundown of other edge rusher options who are on the cusp of free agency.

TYLER LINDERBAUM, CENTER — The surprise retirment of Pro Bowl center Drew Dalman put the Bears in a bind. Dalman was just one year into a three-year deal he signed last offseason before he decided to hang ’em up. And while I’m happy for Dalman to walk out on his own terms, it leaves Chicago’s football team in search of help at a position that it probably thought was locked down for at least another year. Thankfully, there is one high-profile center option who makes sense for the Bears.

The Bears were reportedly “sniffing around” Tyler Linderbaum at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, which makes sense now that the Dalman retirement news is out there in the open. Linderbaum, 25, is a three-time Pro Bowler and is regarded as one of the best players at his position. He figures to reset the market with his next contract, which means the University of Iowa product could land a deal north of $20 million per year. That might seem like a pretty penny to pay. But when you consider what Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson has said about the importance of the center position in his offense, the juice could be worth the squeeze.
