UACD host three speakers running for public office, discuss platforms from each campaign

The UA College Democrats hosted Democratic candidates Dakarai Larriett, Ashleigh Dunham and Amanda Pusczek on Tuesday to discuss their campaign platforms, the state of Alabama and students’ concerns about political issues.

Larriett, a UA alum who has spent several years working in a corporate environment in New York, is running for the U.S. Senate. He said his campaign’s top priorities are education, healthcare and economic opportunities.

Dunham, a former litigator, is running for the Alabama Supreme Court and is interested in protecting reproductive healthcare.

Pusczek is running in the Democratic primary to represent Alabama’s 4th Congressional District. She currently works as a nurse and said she had never considered running for a political office, but feels that the country needs someone “willing to make a change.”

Samuel McKinney, president of UACD and a senior majoring in political science and economics, said that the candidates reached out to the organization about speaking at one of the organization’s meetings, and that it was a good opportunity to get students involved in state politics.

“We’ve got the democratic primary coming up on May 19, and we’re trying to get as many people running for office in Alabama to showcase what their campaigns are,” he said. “A lot of young people feel like their voices aren’t heard, and these are the perfect events to have intimate conversations with the people running for office.”

Caroline Wood, treasurer of UACD, said the candidates came to “get people excited for their elections.”

She said she believes these kinds of events are important because they “put faces to the candidates” voters want to elect.

Each candidate introduced their campaign platforms, and a Q&A session followed during which audience members had the chance to ask questions to the candidates directly.

Larriett called his campaign a “listening campaign,” and said he wants youth to know that their voice matters.

Pusczek described District 4 as “one of the reddest in the country,” currently represented by Republican Robert Aderholt. Aderholt ran unopposed in 2024, receiving 98.8 percent of votes in the 2024 general election.

Pusczek said her campaign is all about making sure people know they have a choice to change that.

Maddison Hunter, membership director of the UACD, said that having the candidates speak to students in a classroom setting offers a more conducive environment for asking questions.

“People are moving here and are registered here, and they want to know what’s going on in their district or what’s going on in the state,” Hunter said. “They want to get involved because they care.”
