A man from Chicago is facing charges after a dog boarder’s van was stolen in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood with eight dogs inside.
Edwin Herrera, 46, is facing several charges after he allegedly stole the van from outside Animal Lovers Pet Salon on the 2200 block of North Clybourn on Tuesday morning.
Around 8:55 a.m. Tuesday, David Cox, owner of dog boarding company Markay’s Castle of Dogs, said he was picking up dogs from the salon when his van was stolen.
Surveillance video of the crime shows Cox walk into Animal Lovers Pet Salon. As he walks inside, another person can be seen walking up to the van and stealing it.
“I counted 20 seconds from the moment I left the side of my van to the moment that my van drove off by with someone else driving it,” he said.
The vehicle was recovered on the 1200 block of West Oakdale Avenue by authorities, and a Herrera was taken into custody, authorities said.
Herrera is facing five felony counts, including cruelty to animals, and eight misdemeanor counts, authorities said.
The dogs inside were a male labradoodle, a female mini dachshund, a male mountain dog, a female aussie mix, a female husky, a female sheep dog, a male husky and a female lab mix.
Mark Botoske, owner of Winnie, the mini daschund, told NBC Chicago Cox does a “great job” with his boarding company and that he was “just happy that everybody’s safe.”
