ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police Officer Anthony DiPonzio, who was shot in the head while responding to a call in 2009, is now sharing his story in a new book, “Officer Down: The Hidden Cost Behind the Oath,” due out later this year. News10NBC spoke with DiPonzio about his journey and the changes he’s observed since the incident.
Reflecting on that fateful day, DiPonzio recalled, “January 31st, 2009 went into work. One of the other officers that I worked with went to go clear a drug corner. I went back to him up and that’s about the last thing that I remember, I was shot in the back of the head.”
After years of rehabilitation, DiPonzio returned to the department in 2011 and began instructing at the police academy. He has been writing about his experiences since 2010, documenting his journey from the hospital to his rehabilitation.
DiPonzio explained, “I started in, 2010 and started writing about, you know, what I remembered from that night and just some fragmented memories that I had of the call, my ride to the hospital and coming to in the hospital.”
When asked about the message he hopes readers take away from his book, DiPonzio said, “The number one thing I wanted to do was to make sure that the officers that were with me, they received the recognition that that they deserve for the fantastic job they did keeping me alive and also wanted to humanize the badge.”
DiPonzio also shared his thoughts on changes in policing, saying, “That’s a tough one for me to answer because I haven’t been out on the street in, in a long time…the enthusiasm for the job from the younger officers brings me back to when I was going to the academy. So it’s refreshing to see. I will say that is one thing that I’ve noticed that has not changed is the dedication to the job from the new officers coming on.”
DiPonzio’s book will include a foreword by his neurosurgeon, Dr. Paul Maurer, and introduction by fellow officer, Detective Paul Dondorfer.
