Savannah Guthries Mom Nancy Update: Sheriff Weighs in on Missing Piece of Evidence

Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing more than a month after the abduction from her Tucson, Ariz., home—and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos recently shared an update on a "missing piece of evidence."

In an interview that aired on Today on Wednesday, March 4, the Pima County Sheriff discussed where the investigation stands when it comes to digital forensics in the 84-year-old’s case.

After mentioning that physical evidence remains a key focus in the case, NBC correspondent Liz Kreutz pointed out that investigators are still looking into a key "missing piece of evidence"—the suspect's cell phone. From a phone pinging cell towers, to trying to connect to a nearby Wi-Fi network, to even turning off a device, these actions can create a digital trail leading to the potential suspect.

Nanos confirmed that investigators have been looking into cell tower data in Nancy's investigation.

"I think the cell data towers have helped us in eliminating people, and looking at things, and different things," he confirmed to Kreutz on Day 32 of the search for Nancy. However, Nanos also acknowledged, "And there's still a lot of that data that needs to be looked at."

Additionally, Nanos said that investigators cannot say definitively if one of the images released from Nancy's Nest camera was taken at an earlier date before the abduction. The sheriff did say, however, that he does believe it was the same person in all of the images.

On Feb. 1, the Pima County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) embarked on its search for Nancy after she was last seen at her Catalina Foothills residence on Jan. 31. Savannah and her siblings, Annie and Camron, have sent multiple video messages to the potential captor since then, after receiving several alleged ransom notes. Most recently, Savannah offered a $1 million reward for any information leading to Nancy’s return.

In a Feb. 27 statement, the PCSD—after withdrawing a number of officers from Tucson to refocus their efforts—said, “This remains an active investigation and will continue until Nancy Guthrie is located or all leads have been exhausted,” per People. “The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is refocusing resources to detectives specifically assigned to this case. As leads are developed and resolved, resource allocation may fluctuate. PCSD will maintain a patrol presence in the Guthrie neighborhood.”

Those with any information about Nancy’s missing case are advised to contact the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
