It was a dramatic finish for the Billings West girls and a repeat title for the Bozeman boys at the Montana High School Association AA Swimming and Diving Championships.

    In the girls’ meet, Billings West won its first title since 2005 by one point over Bozeman Gallatin, clinching the championship by winning the 400 free relay.

    There wasn’t such drama in the boys’ competition, where Bozeman was 94 points better than runner-up Great Falls.

    Entering the 400 free relay, Billings West trailed Bozeman Gallatin by seven points. West did its part by winning the event in a time of 3:38.91 behind the team of Alexa Githens (55.16), Adrienne Hasiak (58.19), Ava Cancro (53.78) and Josie Cancro (51.78).

    Needing a 2nd-place finish to claim the overall title, Gallatin fell one spot shy, settling for 3rd in 3:40.61, just 37 one-hundredths back of runner-up Great Falls.

    The three individual standouts were Belgrade junior Dylon Flikkema, Hellcat senior Emily Hensiek and Capital junior Elizabeth Urban.

    Flikkema first repeated as champion in the 200 IM, coming in with a time of 2:07.11. She then later won the 100 back in 54.50.

    Flikkema also split 23.01 oin the anchor leg of Belgrade’s winning team in the 200 free relay, which touched the wall in a time of 1:40.87. Other team members were AJ Lilyquist (25.65), Harlee Flikkema (26.11) and Maya Lilyquist (26.10).

    Hensiek swept the sprint freestyle events, capturing the 50 free in 23.66 and the 100 free in 51.48, both personal bests.

    Urban repeated as champion in the 100 fly in a time of 57.98 and then won the 100 breast in 1:05.62.

    Other event winners were:

    The Billings West team of Githens (28.78), Sophia Hasiak (31.88), A. Cancro (26.85) and J. Cancro (23.67) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:51.18. J. Cancro, a senior for Billings West, won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:53.58. Ellyn Lewis, a senior for Big Sky, repeated as champion in the 500 free in a time of 5:09.98.

    Boys’ Recap 

    Bozeman was led by junior Maximiliano Aguirre and senior Cal McColley, who  won two events apiece.

    Aguirre first captured the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:52.93, and then repeated as champion in the 100 breast with a time of 56.31. Aguirre was the champion in the 100 fly last year.

    McColley repeated as champion in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.01, and then won the 50 free in a time of 21.73 after taking 2nd in the event last year.

    The two were also instrumental in Bozeman sweeping all three relays.

    The team of McColley (24.58), Aguirre (25.54), Bryce Thorn (23.62) and Emery Belasco (22.49) first won the 200 medley in a time of 1:36.23, over six seconds ahead of Hellgate.

    In the 200 free relay, McColley split 21.00 on the anchor leg to help Bozeman win in a time of 1:28.73. Other team members were Thorn (22.50), Ollie Belasco (22.27) and Quinn McColley (22.96).

    It was Aquirre’s turn to swim anchor in the 400 free relay, finishing off with a 46.96 split to help Bozeman win in 3:15.29. Other team members were O. Belasco (49.36), Q. McColley (48.74) and E. Belasco (50.23).

    The other multi-event winner was Great Falls sophomore Duncan Schroeder, who won the 100 free in 51.62 and the 500 free in 4:52.56, both personal bests.

    Gallatin junior Trigve Chvilicek won the 100 free in a personal best 48.36, while Great Falls junior Seth Woldtvedt repeated as champion in the 100 back with a time of 52.84.
