Former India cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri has reckoned that the team should persist with Abhishek Sharma in the playing XI despite concerns over his form. The explosive opener has not been in good touch in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 and hasn’t played any big knocks apart from a half-century against Zimbabwe. Ahead of the semi-final against England on Thursday, Shastri pointed out that Abhishek had a terrific series against England the last time the two sides locked horns.

Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri said that the team management must have a word with Abhishek on his mental space and he should only be dropped if he isn’t there. The former coach said that only in that case, India should move Ishan Kishan to the top of the order to open with Sanju Samson and have Rinku Singh bat down the order to add firepower. However, Shastri threw his weight behind Abhishek to continue in the playing XI, noting that he had enjoyed success while playing at the Wankhede stadium in the past.
“Unless the team management realises that, mentally he’s not there. If mentally, his mindset has taken a beating, it is for them to judge from the outside, in conversations with him, just seeing the way he is batting in the nets. That could be the only change, but I would still persist with him because last time India played England, he had a terrific series against them. I would not take that away at the Wankhede,” Shastri said. “He has done well in the past. He’s got some big hundreds there and very quick hundreds. I will persist with him because there is enough firepower in that batting,” Shastri said.
Abhishek, so far in the tournament, has registered scores of 0, 0, 0, 15, 55 and 10.
