The Rev. Dr. Rodney Sadler bested incumbent Rep. Carla Cunningham in a Mecklenburg County primary to win the Democratic nomination in heavily-Democratic District 106. Sadler won with 70% to Cunningham’s 22% in unofficial results.
No Republicans signed up to run in House District 106, so Sadler will most likely win the seat in November by default.
Cunningham has for years crossed the aisle to help Republicans achieve parts of their agenda.
Democrats’ frustration with the seven-term House member boiled over last year when she made a controversial speech about immigrants before casting a crucial vote overriding Gov. Josh Stein’s veto of an immigration bill. Cunningham said of immigrants, “All cultures are not equal,” leading some to accuse her of racism.
Cunningham defiantly defended her speech during a local town hall in August, but later recorded a campaign video apologizing for her remarks.
Cunningham’s other primary challenger, Vermanno Bowman, won about 8% of the vote in unofficial results.
Sadler won important local endorsements, and Gov. Josh Stein backed him.
Cunningham had the endorsement of the local Fraternal Order of Police, and her campaign posted videos from Sens. Dan Blue of Wake County and Gladys Robinson of Guilford County declaring their support for her.
Sadler reported raising about $250,000 for the race as of mid-February. Cunningham and Bowman’s campaign finance disclosures are not up to date.
First-term Democratic incumbent Rodney Pierce easily outpaces 2024 primary foe
First-term incumbent Rep. Rodney Pierce fought off a primary challenge from former Rep. Michael Wray, winning 64% of the vote to Wray’s 36% in unofficial results.
Pierce narrowly beat Wray in the primary two years ago to represent Halifax, Warren and Northampton counties. Early on, Wray said he wanted a rematch.
Stein backed Pierce, who will face Republican Kenneth Bentley Jr. in the heavily Democratic district in November.
Wray was known for siding with the House Republican majority on multiple occasions to help override former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s vetoes.
In December, Wray appealed to Republicans in his district to switch their voter registrations to unaffiliated so they would be able to vote for him in the primary.
GOP Rep. Jake Johnson crushes a former House majority leader’s comeback hopes
Incumbent Rep. Jake Johnson (R-Polk) held on to his seat representing House District 113, beating back a challenge from former House Majority Leader Mike Hager (R-Rutherford).
With all precincts reporting, Johnson won 61% of the vote to Hager’s 39%, in unofficial results. Johnson does not have a general election opponent, so he is all but certain to return to Raleigh in 2027.
Johnson has served a little more than three terms in the House, but has risen quickly in the ranks of chamber leadership, becoming chairman of the House Oversight Committee and a vice chairman of the House budget committee.
Hager resigned his House seat in August 2016. Two years earlier, he attempted a run for House Speaker, but dropped his bid. Months after resigning his seat, Hager launched a lobbying business where he represented gaming companies, local towns, one of the state’s area mental health offices, and a group pushing for a convention of the states to propose amending the Constitution, among other clients.
