Former Democratic U.S. House Rep. Wiley Nickel will likely replace longtime Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman, who decided last year not to seek reelection.
Nickel entered the race with more name recognition than his two challengers, Assistant District Attorney Melanie Shekita and attorney Sherita Walton, who advises the Raleigh Police Department. Nickel served in the state Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives (NC-13) before being drawn out of the district by redistricting.
No Republican filed for this race, making Nickel virtually certain to be Wake County’s next DA, having captured 49% of the unofficial primary vote. Walton secured 30% of the votes cast, with Shekita trailing in third place with 20% of the vote.
The Wake DA’s office manages over 100,000 cases annually. Perhaps more importantly, it’s the district attorney who decides whether state corruption cases are prosecuted.
Nickel touted himself as the only candidate in the race to have built a successful law firm and managed a large government office. He stressed that he would use the office to prosecute political corruption.
“The Wake County District Attorney investigates and prosecutes all of North Carolina’s political corruption and government malfeasance cases because of our position in the state’s Capitol,” said Nickel. “We need a District Attorney who will stand up for our rights and freedoms, hold corrupt politicians accountable, and defend the rule of law and our Constitution.”
He has also said he will use his political connections in the legislature to secure more funding for prosecutor positions. Wake County currently has 43 prosecutors, compared to 94 prosecutors in Mecklenburg County.
Nickel had initially eyed the open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Thom Tillis. When former Gov. Roy Cooper entered that race, Nickel pivoted to the district attorney’s contest.
