Wake County District Judge Christine Walczyk (left) faced off against Raleigh attorney James Whalen in one of the closest statewide primaries in North Carolina this year.
Wake County District Court Judge Christine Walczyk appears to be the winner of the Democratic primary for Seat 3 on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
With 81% of statewide precincts reporting, Walczyk leads Raleigh attorney and political newcomer James Whalen with 62% of the votes cast in unofficial results. Whalen captured 38% of the vote.
Having served as a district court trial judge in Wake County for 19 years, Walczyk says she decided to run for the seat because she was increasingly concerned about the public’s loss of confidence in the court system.
Walczyk told NC Newsline she wanted to ensure a “strong, independent, balanced, and diverse Court” that will safeguard individual liberties and due process.
Walczyk stressed that judges should set aside politics and refrain from advocating for causes or ideas on the bench.
If elected in November, she would be the only Democratic woman on the Court of Appeals, following the departure of Judge Allegra Collins.
She earned notable endorsements from former Chief Justice Cheri Beasley and former Justice Robin Hudson, both of whom served on the state Supreme Court.
Walczyk now moves on to face Republican Superior Court Judge Craig Collins, who did not face a primary opponent, in the General Election.
Democrats have lost every Court of Appeals race in the state since 2020. The party is hopeful that Walczyk can help to reverse those fortunes this year.
