Top Chef: Carolinas kicked things off at the Charlotte Motor Speedway NASCAR racetrack in Concord, North Carolina, welcoming NASCAR legends Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson as guest judges, before moving on to a local high-end restaurant run by Top Chef alum Jamie Lynch, who finished in 9th place on Top Chef: Charleston (season 14).

Who Went Home on 'Top Chef' Season 23 Tonight?

After a sweet potato challenge, the chef who was eliminated was Day Anaïs Joseph, who was assigned the Carolina Ruby sweet potato for her dish. She prepared roasted Carolina Ruby with herbes de provence, sos Kreyol and seared and roasted snapper. Unfortunately, both her fish and sweet potatoes were undercooked and the herbes de provence overpowered the dish, so she was sent home first.

What Were the 2 Challenges on the 'Top Chef' Season 23 Premiere?
The challenge was five teams of three competed to create one dish (anything they wanted) but they only had the time it takes a professional NASCAR driver to do 23 laps around the track, which was not a lot of time. I looked it up and a lap at the Charlotte Motor Speedway takes about 30 seconds (the record is 27 seconds). That's approximately 11.5 minutes to get the dish ready. They also had the rule that they could not start plating until the final lap. Wowza.
The winning team was the Blue Team, comprised of Jonathan, Jennifer and Lawrence. They made a crab and shrimp hush puppy with harissa aioli and a napa cabbage and peach salad. No immunity this season, but they each won $5000.
The Elimination Challenge was to create a dish based around sweet potatoes, which are North Carolina's state vegetable. They only got one hour and they had to draw knives for which variety of sweet potato they could use in their dish.

Jamie Lynch was a guest judge alongside chefs Cheetie Kumar, Chayil Johnson and Sean Brock.
For the challenge, they presented in groups of three and in each group, the judges picked one dish to be up for the winning dish and one chef who was up for elimination. And another twist—the first two chefs that are eliminated this season will not get to go to Last Chance Kitchen.
The five chefs up for elimination were Day, Nana, Justin, Brittany and Jennifer, though the judges admitted that Justin and Jennifer both had good dishes but were in very strong groups.
The five chefs up for best dish were Anthony, twin brothers Jonathan and Brandon, Rhoda and Duyen.
The winning dish overall went to Rhoda and she won immunity for next week, while the bottom 2 were Day and Nana, with Day being eliminated for undercooked fish and sweet potatoes and overpowering herbs.
Top Chef airs Monday nights from 9:30 to 10:45 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo. All season 23 episodes will be supersized to 75 minutes.
