The Bears’ OTHER Offensive Line Issue — What Should They Do With Braxton Jones?

The Chicago Bears’ offensive line is in flux with Drew Dalman’s retirement. And while Braxton Jones isn’t an option at center, we can’t lose sight of the uncertainty at left tackle.

Braxton Jones’ 2025 Snapshot

So, the good news is that Braxton Jones made a return to the gridiron in 2025 after a nasty leg injury cut short his 2024 season. But the bad news is that Jones didn’t return to the form we saw in his first three seasons with the team. And after another injury-shortened season, his future with the Bears is in doubt.

The 2025 campaign was a mixed one for Braxton Jones. It felt good to see him work his way back from injury and re-enter the starting lineup. However, it felt as if he won the summertime left tackle competition by default. Ozzy Trapilo developed slowly as a rookie to the point where he was moved back to the right side of the line. And while Theo Benedet made a push, the second-year undrafted linemen didn’t get enough reps after being a late entrant to the race.

It felt like the folks at Halas Hall were holding out hope that Braxton Jones would round into form after being named the starting left tackle in Week 1. For what it’s worth, Jones had three years of starting experience and there was enough tape out there suggesting that he could be a perfectly cromulent option going into 2026. But Jones never recaptured the magic of his first three seasons, was benched, and then suffered a knee injury that took him out of action altogether. Long story, short: It was a rough year for Braxton Jones.

Now that his four-year rookie contract is complete, Braxton Jones will be a free agent once the new league year begins. Jones’ four-year deal paid him $6,383,881. All in all, the Bears got tremendous value out of Jones on his rookie deal. To get a respectable four-year starter at a premium position whose cap number took up 0.4 percent of the team’s spending in his first three years and maxed out at 1.3 percent in the final year is an absolute steal.

    Turning the Page

The Bears are in a sticky wicket. This team needs a starting left tackle because Ozzy Trapilo is expected miss a hearty chunk (if not all) of the 2026 season while recovering from a knee injury suffered in Chicago’s playoff win against Green Bay. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a slam-dunk in-house option.

BRAXTON JONES REFLECTS ON INJURY, RECOVERY, AND COMPETITION

This team could give Theo Benedet (who started a handful of games at left tackle last season) a shot, and I wouldn’t be against that happening. However, it feels telling that he didn’t get an opportunity to start at left tackle in the Bears’ playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams. And I do not think Kiran Amegadjie will get another opportunity to play tackle because he seems better suited as a guard moving forward.

Perhaps this is where Braxton Jones could be a good fit. I can see the Bears bringing Jones back on a one-year “prove it” deal. We saw this team create competition with Jones, Benedet, and Trapilo last summer. Doing it again wouldn’t be the worst idea. Plus, it could help Jones rebuild his value for the 2027 offseason.
