Tails were wagging Tuesday after eight dogs that were inside a grooming van when it was stolen in Chicago were reunited with their owners.
Around 8:55 a.m., David Cox, owner of dog boarding company Markay’s Castle of Dogs, was picking up dogs from Animal Lovers Pet Salon on the 2200 block of North Clybourn in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood when the company’s van was stolen.
Surveillance video of the crime shows Cox walk into Animal Lovers Pet Salon. As the employee walks inside, another person can be seen walking up to the van and stealing it.
Cox said he picks dogs up at the salon every Tuesday and Thursday to take them to his boarding facility in Indiana where they can run around and play for the day. He was in the process of dropping off bags in the salon when the van was stolen with eight dogs inside, he said.
“I counted 20 seconds from the moment I left the side of my van to the moment that my van drove off by with someone else driving it,” he said.
The vehicle was recovered on the 1200 block of West Oakdale Avenue by authorities, and a 46-year-old man was taken into custody, police said. Charges are pending.
A husky named K.J. was among the dogs in the van when it was stolen.
“He’s had quite the week. He was just hospitalized this week for seizures, and for the first time, and so he is newly on epileptic medicine, and that was my biggest concern,” K.J.’s owner, Jason Brett, told NBC Chicago.
The other dogs inside were a male labradoodle, a female mini dachshund, a male mountain dog, a female aussie mix, a female husky, a female sheep dog, and a female lab mix.
Mark Botoske, owner of Winnie, the mini daschund, said Cox does a “great job” with his boarding company and that he was “just happy that everybody’s safe.”
After the nightmare morning, Cox said his plans to move forward with his business are to keep “loving our people, loving our dogs, loving our clients.”
“We’ll go back to doing things the way that we do it, with some new protocols and safety measures,” he said.
Markay’s Castle of Dogs shared a social media post about the theft shortly after it occurred.
Markay’s clarified the van that was stolen was their blue and black colored van and shared pictures of the eight dogs that were in the van when it was stolen.
