ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As tensions rise globally, the Monroe County Veteran Services is offering crucial advice to veterans and military families.
Nick Stefanovic, director of Monroe County Veteran Services, emphasizes the importance of taking breaks from social media to protect mental health.
Stefanovic highlights the emotional challenges faced by veterans who served in Lebanon during the Beirut bombings.
“The current events may be particularly triggering for them,” he said, noting the historical connection to Iran. He also advises parents of service members to manage their own stress and avoid being consumed by anxiety.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Stefanovic shared, “When I was in the Marine Corps, I couldn’t wait to get to Afghanistan or Iraq. I wanted to do my job. I suspect if you talk to my daughter right now, she would also tell you she can’t wait to get out of her school so she can get involved in this conflict. It’s not the mindset that parents have. As a parent, I don’t want my daughter to see some of the things that I saw, but she may. And, you know, as a parent, you also have to be able to really take care of yourself right now and not become consumed by that stress and that fear. And also know that we have a very, very strong, competent military. And I have no doubt that my daughter is going to be well taken care of, well trained and prepared to do her job.”
Stefanovic encourages veterans experiencing difficulties to reach out to the the Veteran Services and attend its services.
For families with active service members, he recommends support groups like the Blue Star Mothers. The Blue Star Mothers shared a statement expressing condolences to families and friends of those being deployed, hoping for a full recovery for injured service members.
Blue Star Mothers full statement can be seen below.
” We stand in support of all Blue Star Mothers who have a son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter serving overseas and in harm’s way. The Rochester Blue Star Mothers’ mission is to support service members and their families and it is through our monthly business meetings (3rd Saturday of the month at 9:30am at the Ely Fagan Stevens Connor Post 1151, 260 Middle Rd, Henrietta NY 14467) and social gatherings (1st Monday of the month at a rotating Panera Bread location) that we support each other through these uncertain times. All military families are welcome. We understand that by taking care of your own need for support, we become an even stronger pillar of support and resilience for our service members. The Rochester Blue Star Mothers sends care packages out twice yearly to deployed service members. We know how important it is for our service members to know they are thought of and remembered by the folks at home. Our next set of care packages are mailed in June.
