The Arizona Cardinals are moving on from quarterback Kyler Murray.
The Cardinals are releasing the quarterback, confirms Arizona Sports.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first to report the planned release.
Murray issued a farewell message on social media just before the news broke.
“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in Arizona, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” Murray said on X. “I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77-year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best.
“I am no stranger to adversity. I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed.”
Murray heads elsewhere after posting a 38-48-1 record as Arizona’s starting quarterback.
The Cardinals’ decision to move on from Murray comes after a 3-14 season in 2025. Murray made it just five games before being placed on injured reserve with a midfoot sprain. He posted a 2-3 mark, completing 68.3% of his throws for 962 yards and six touchdowns to three interceptions. Murray also ran the rock 29 times for 173 yards and a score.
In place of Murray, quarterback Jacoby Brissett took the offense a step further, completing 64.9% of his passes for 3,366 passing yards and 23 touchdowns to eight interceptions. Despite Brissett getting more out of the offense, he posted a 1-11 mark as a starter last year.
Now with Murray headed elsewhere, Brissett is expected to be in the mix to once again be Arizona’s starter in 2026. It also marks a contract year for Brissett, who signed a two-year deal with Arizona last offseason.
Kyler Murray’s polarizing Cardinals tenure comes to unceremonious end
Murray came to town as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and was instantly thrust into a starting role.

As part of a first-year package deal with then-head coach Kliff Kingsbury, Murray flashed his potential as a rookie.
Across his first 16 starts, the signal caller completed 64.4% of his throws for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.
He turned on the jets behind another 544 yards and four scores on 93 carries, helping cement his status as the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Murray followed up an impressive Year 1 with back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons from 2020-21. That included a 37-touchdown and 4,790-yard effort through the air and on the ground in 2020.
The team also showed noticeable growth under Murray, eventually making the playoffs in Year 3 of the quarterback and Kingsbury coming to town.
Murray’s lone playoff appearance for the franchise was a miserable one in a Wild Card loss to the Los Angeles Rams following a second-half-of-the-season skid to finish 11-6 despite a 7-0 start.
A five-year contract extension worth $230.5 million with $160 million guaranteed came in the offseason that followed but wasn’t without some tumultuous negotiations, Instagram scrubbing and the infamous study clause (that was later removed).
That would be the peak of Murray’s tenure in Arizona.
Eleven games into the 2022 season and trying to keep a sinking Cardinals ship afloat, the quarterback went down with a torn ACL.
He missed the rest of the season while the Cardinals moved on from Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim resigned in the offseason that followed.
Murray made his way back from the injury midway through 2023 with a new front office and coaching staff running the show.
He turned in his first full season in four years in 2024, completing 68.8% of his throws for 3,851 yards and 21 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. He scored five times and added another 572 yards on 78 carries.
The turnaround some thought would be in the cards in 2025 didn’t materialize, though, with Murray instead spending more time on the shelf than in the starting lineup.
Murray now gets a chance at reviving his once promising career, while the Cardinals get a major reset at the most important position in the sport.
