North Carolina Governor Josh Stein used Tuesday’s Council of State meeting to remind North Carolinians to stay vigilant as President Donald Trump suggests the war against Iran could take four to five weeks.

The U.S. military confirmed on Monday that six Americans have been killed and 18 seriously injured in Operation Epic Fury.

Stein opened his remarks to council members saying that he joins everyone in the state in mourning the loss of those service members.

“North Carolina has among the largest population of active service members in the country,” said Stein. “We certainly owe all of them a deep sense of gratitude for their willingness to serve.”

For those not in uniform, the governor said safety must be paramount.

“Cybersecurity risks are heightened as we’re in this war with Iran,” Stein said. “Folks just need to have extra safe practices to reduce the likelihood of cyberattacks.”

To that end, the North Carolina Department of Justice recommends consumers update cybersecurity software to better protect personal information against data breaches. If suspicious activity occurs in financial accounts, the agency recommends reporting it immediately to law enforcement.

Stein said North Carolinians must also have their eyes open for lone wolf events.

Authorities continue to investigate a possible lone wolf shooter in Austin, Texas who left two dead and 14 injured over the weekend. Law enforcement says 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne had an Iranian flag as well as pictures of Iranian leaders in his home. Diagne reportedly came to the country from Senegal in 2000 and became an American citizen in 2013.

“Just stay vigilant. Understand that even though the war is taking place far away, it does not mean that we cannot feel its effects here in North Carolina,” Stein cautioned.

The U.S. State Department has urged Americans in the Middle East to leave the region, though air travel has been disrupted.

Stein said that he is praying for everyone’s safety and for a quick resolution to the war in Iran.

North Carolina’s military installations have all heightened security.

At the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, the base website notes that drivers should expect 100% ID checks, random vehicle inspections, and the suspension of the Trusted Traveler Program. All unvetted visitors will now report to the installation’s visitor center to request a pass and permission for access.

“These enhanced security measures are being implemented to safeguard our service members, civilians, and families, while ensuring our continued ability to generate and project combat power at the time and place of our Nation’s choosing,” reads an advisory on the Cherry Point website.

Similar precautions are also in place at Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune.
