Harry Styles ran straight past a traditional magazine cover opportunity ahead of his new album, instead appearing on the front of Runner’s World‘s latest issue — but according to him, few things have meant more to his life and the creation of Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally than running.

In the cover story published Tuesday (March 3), the pop star opened up about taking solace in the act of running after years of grappling with fame and the isolation that comes with it. After shooting to superstardom in 2010 with the formation of One Direction on X Factor, for instance, Styles told the magazine that “over the years, I had to say no to everything I was invited to, whether it was a friend’s birthday, a trip somewhere amazing, an opening.”
“I started to wonder if I was saying no because I really was so busy or because it was more comfortable than saying yes,” he continued of feeling walled off by his recognizability, which has only grown since he became a soloist in 2017. “When you close yourself off to protect yourself from people who might bring negativity into your life, you’re also missing out on positive experiences.”
The Runner’s World issue comes just a few days ahead of the March 6 release of the former boy bander’s fourth studio album, which follows 2022’s Billboard 200-topping Harry’s House (for which he graced the cover of Better Homes & Gardens, another atypical magazine partnership for an A-list pop star on the cusp of dropping new music). Elsewhere in his conversation with the running publication, he spoke about the “synergy” he’s noticed between his athletic hobby and the “hypnotic, meditative aspect of music.”
“When I’m running is when I have … time to think a lot about what I’m making and other things in my life too,” he added.
But even before the new interview dropped, fans have known about Styles’ love for running. During his time away from releasing music and performing, people spotted him multiple times going for jogs around London or Rome, where he has maintained a temporary residence in recent years. He also surprised onlookers by running marathons in Tokyo and Berlin, finishing both with impressive stats.
Another reason he loves running is that it’s a convenient way for Styles to feel like he can be out and about in public without drawing too much attention to himself. “The main thing is that you’re always moving,” he told Runner’s Weekly. “You can turn a corner wherever. I think with people who see me, it’s a bit more, ‘Was that … ?’ rather than, ‘Oh look, it’s him!’ And by that time, you’re already gone.”
Running also helps Styles center himself after being at the center of “so much stimulation” on tour. His Love on Tour lasted from 2021 to 2023, and his Together, Together trek will take him all over the world starting this May.
“Something I’ve often struggled with, in the middle of a tour, is feeling like I’m not sure what I’m giving, not sure what I’m adding to the world,” he told the publication. “Especially when the reward system and the kind of … adulation that you can receive feels so loud. Like clearly, I’m getting so much from this, I’m getting all this energy. People are giving me so much, which I deeply appreciate. But what am I contributing? At times I felt quite existential about that.”
