Syrian Civil Aviation reopens air corridors in partial move

The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority announced today, Tuesday, March 3, the reopening of air corridors in the northern sector of Syrian airspace toward the Republic of Turkey.

In a statement published on its Facebook page, the authority said that Aleppo International Airport will resume operations starting at 00:00 on Wednesday, March 4. Other air corridors and Damascus International Airport will remain closed until further notice.

The announcement follows a series of precautionary measures taken in recent days to ensure air traffic safety amid the US- Israeli war on Iran.

    Operational and security assessments

The Syrian Civil Aviation Authority said the decision came after a comprehensive assessment of operational and security data, aiming to strike a balance between aviation safety and security requirements on one hand, and maintaining a minimum level of air connectivity to serve citizens and facilitate travel, supplies, and vital activities on the other.

According to the statement, the move is based on continuous evaluations of the operational and field situation.

    Reviewing precautionary measures

In the same context, the head of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority and Air Transport, Omar al-Husri, held an expanded meeting on Tuesday, March 3, with the Air Traffic Emergency Management team to review regional developments and assess their technical impact on air transport in Syria.

The meeting also reviewed the precautionary procedures and operational measures in place.

The authority’s deputies, Amjad Nakhal and Sameh Arabi, attended the meeting alongside directors of relevant technical and operational departments.

The authority stated that the adopted measures were reviewed in accordance with a risk-based assessment methodology and the Safety Management System, ensuring the highest levels of aviation safety and civil aviation security.

It stressed that decisions regarding airspace management are taken exclusively on the basis of aviation safety and security considerations, in line with international standards governing air traffic.

    Temporary closure

On February 28, the authority had announced the temporary closure of southern air corridors in Syrian airspace to aircraft movement for 12 hours starting at 12:00 p.m. Damascus time, in order to ensure the highest aviation safety standards.

At the time, it said air navigation would be managed through approved alternative routes during the closure period to ensure smooth traffic flow and continuity of operations in accordance with established air traffic management systems.

Later that same day, the authority announced the closure of Syrian airspace to all aircraft movements and suspended takeoffs and landings at all Syrian airports for 24 hours. The closure was subsequently extended to include March 1 and 2, based on ongoing operational and technical assessments and in light of regional security developments, in commitment to the highest standards of aviation safety and civil aviation security.

During the closure period, developments were monitored continuously and around the clock, according to the authority.
