ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Advocates are calling for change after a shooting at a short-term rental in Charlotte left two 16-year-olds injured, one critically. The incident took place at house rented through VRBO during a party on Saturday night.
Neighbors expressed their concerns following the recent shooting. Robert Johnson, who lives nearby, recounted the chaotic scene. “Gunshots woke me up, and the next thing you know, everybody was scared and running towards the car,” Johnson said.
Now, the push for a short-term rental registry in Monroe County is facing a fresh round of discussion after the county legislators voted in December to opt out of such a registry.
Rachel Barnhart, a Monroe County legislator, emphasized the importance of the registry. “There are several reasons why we need a short-term rental registry,” Barnhart said. “The first is transparency into the market so that we see where they’re operating and who’s operating them.”
Barnhart highlighted the benefits of a registry, which is operated by the state and already in place in other New York counties like Erie, Onondaga, and Albany. “The second is tax collection to make sure that they are on a level playing field with hotels and paying their fair share of taxes,” she said. “And the third reason is public safety. We just had a terrible incident in Rochester, not the first one, a shooting at an Airbnb party and public safety and basic transparency and oversight should mean a registry is in order.”
The issue of safety is not new to Barnhart’s district. Over three years ago, a deadly shooting occurred at a short-term rental on Illinois Street.
It’s because of that shooting Debbi Keller of the North Winton Village Association is also advocating for the registry. “That was just a block away. It was also a party,” Keller said. “And again, it’s not allowing those one night, two night local stays [to happen]…Some of these houses are sitting vacant for months.”
Another neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, shared frustration about the disturbances. “95% of the s–t that happens in my neighborhood is from people outside my neighborhood, and it’s getting a little tiring,” he said.
The timeline for a potential vote on a short-term rental registry in Monroe County remains uncertain.
