Suburban tow truck driver charged with selling stolen vehicles for scrap medal

A south suburban tow truck driver was arrested on felony charges after allegedly selling several vehicles for scrap metal, Illinois State Police said.

Saeed Mustafa, 36, was charged with six counts of conspiracy to receive/possess/sell a stolen motor vehicle, which is a Class 2 felony.

State police said they were called on Feb. 12 after a victim reported their vehicle was stolen from the Bishop Ford Freeway near Beaubien Woods following a crash. According to authorities, the victim called a private towing company and left the vehicle on the interstate.

When the towing company arrived, the vehicle was gone.

A trooper conducted an investigation and determined Mustafa allegedly took the victim’s vehicle and transported it to a local junk car company, authorities stated. State police said Mustafa provided false paperwork that indicated he had authority to sell the vehicle.

Through an investigation, troopers learned Mustafa brought multiple vehicles to the same company in exchange for money. Several of the vehicles he sold had been reported stolen in Chicago and Indiana, state police said.

Mustafa was taken into custody during a traffic stop along Interstate 94 on Friday.
