WASHINGTON, D.C. — Several months after the Trump administration ended the IRS’ direct file program, some lawmakers are working to reinstate it.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and other Democrats introduced the “Direct File Act.” The act aims to restore the program that allowed taxpayers to file directly with the government online for free. The ‘Direct File Act’ would also make the program permanent.
“Filing your taxes shouldn’t be a burden. But President Trump ended the highly successful Direct File program to side with powerful special interests over everyday Americans, making it harder and more expensive for working families to file their tax returns,” said Gillibrand in a press release.
The IRS first launched Direct File in 2024 to save families time and money.
