BROCKPORT, N.Y. — A 35-year-old man is headed to prison for selling drugs in 2022 that led to an overdose death.

Herschel Dawson was sentenced to 13 years in prison. He was convicted of distribution of fentanyl.

    In April 2022, prosecutors say law enforcement responded to the report of a deadly fentanyl overdose at a home on Gordon Street in Brockport.

    After investigations, Dawson was identified as the drug dealer who gave out the deadly dose of fentanyl. Investigators say Dawson was involved in drug dealing for many years prior to the deadly overdose.

    Overdose deaths in Monroe County

    According to a report from the Medical Examiner’s Office, there were 292 overdose deaths in the county in 2024, compared to 512 in 2023. In 2022, there were 406 overdose deaths, the report says.

    Also in 2024, the report says fentanyl was listed in the cause of death in 213 overdose death cases.
