The second coaching domino involving the Shermans fell at Orange Lutheran.
Girls flag football coach Kristen Sherman has resigned and accepted an assistant coach position with flag football at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the Trinity League school and coach confirmed on Monday.
On Feb. 2, the school announced the departure of Sherman’s husband Rod as the football coach.
Orange Lutheran hasn’t announced a replacement for Rod Sherman, who guided the football team for five seasons.
Kristen Sherman has been Orange Lutheran’s flag football coach since the sport became sanctioned by the CIF Southern Section starting in the fall of 2023.
In 2024, she guided the Lancers to the inaugural Division 1 title and earned O.C. coach of the year.
This past season, the Lancers finished as the Division 1 runner-up to rival JSerra.
Kristen Sherman has been assisted by her husband in flag football.
In three seasons, she compiled a 66-14 record and led the Lancers to Trinity League titles in ’23 and ’24. The past two seasons, the squad has went 47-5.
During her tenure, Kristen Sherman mentored All-County quarterback Makena Cook, who is a junior. Cook was The Register’s O.C. player of the year as a sophomore.
In June, Santiago Canyon College announced Kristen Sherman its first women’s flag football coach but she resigned about a month ago, assistant athletic director Nicho DellaValle said Monday.
The college had earlier decided not to play this season and aims to debut in 2027, he added.
Girls flag football is one of the fastest rising sports in the nation. In August, the CIF State announced participation in the sport has jumped 84 percent to more than 19,000 participants for 2024-25.
